Professional Development LEARN Workshop

Date: Wednesday, May 14th and Thursday, May 15th
Foreign Service Institute
Arlington, VA

Theme: Professional Development for Language Teaching and Learning

The 2014 Professional Development LEARN Steering Committee invites submission of proposals on the topics relevant to the theme “Professional Development for Language Teaching and Learning”. The topics below are not to be exclusive; however, to stimulate ideas, consider how any of them are delivered in a variety of modes (online, f2f, blended, video chat, informally, formally, etc.) and timings (pre-service, in-service).

  • Building learner autonomy, what instructors need to know
  • Teacher training
  • Peer-to-peer training (peer feedback)
  • Planning your own professional development (webinars, MOOCs, f2f classes, online resources, new models of professional development)
  • Train-the-trainer (Teacher to teacher, SME’s to trainers)
  • Language teacher education (University and the government, where is the overlap?)

We encourage a variety of interactive approaches including: panel, remote presentations, video chat, case studies, interviews, and other ideas listed below.

- 50 minute Hands-On Small Group Workshops (Hands-on Small Group Workshops are an ideal format for interactive exploration of a particular topic. )

- 20 minute Show and Tell (Presentations are strictly limited to 20 minutes, plus 10 minutes for questions and answers. Proposals can be for individual or joint presentations.

- 5 minute Ignite Presentation (20 slides, automatically advancing every 15 seconds)

- Poster Presentation for a Share Fair (poster showcasing an initiative, project, opportunity, or idea about professional development)

All proposals must be submitted online at www.FBCconferences.com/LEARN by midnight EST on March 21, 2014 in the correct format. Confirmation of receipt will be emailed instantly upon successful submission. Presenters will be notified by email of the Review Committee’s decision by April 8, 2014.

Proposals must be submitted in English and in final publishable format. The submission should be print-ready in final publishable format. Use all punctuation, underlining, italics, etc. exactly as you want it to be printed in the program guide. All proposals must be written in third person format avoiding the use of "I" and "we." All accepted proposals will be printed in the LEARN Workshop Program Guide as submitted during the Call for Proposals; however, the LEARN Review Committee reserves the right to edit if necessary.
